Everyone knows the infamous serial killers such as Ted Bundy and Ed Gein. These killers may not have the same level of fame but they are just as scary.
Dorothea Puente – This innocent old lady was dubbed by the Sacramento Police Department as the “Death House Landlady”. In the 1980s, Puente rented out rooms in her house to elderly and mentally handicap people in the Sacramento area. She would cash the social security checks that came in the mail for her boarders and if anyone complained they would be killed and buried in her backyard. She was finally discovered in 1988 with the police finding nine bodies in her backyard.
Edmund Kemper – “The Co-Ed” killer as he was known, Kemper was a serial killer, necrophile, rapist, and cannibal. He killed his grandparents when he was only fifteen and was sentenced to five years in a mental hospital for criminally insane juveniles. When released, he went on a killing spree in Santa Cruz, CA, over then next few years taking the lives of ten college females in the area. Patrick Bateman uses a Kemper quote in American Psycho, although it’s wrongly attributed to Ed Gein. The quote is; “You know what Ed Gein (Kemper) said about women? … He said ‘When I see a pretty girl walking down the street, I think two things. One part of me wants to take her out, talk to her, be real nice and sweet and treat her right … [and the other part of me wonders] what her head would look like on a stick'”.

Robert Hansen – Like something out of, “The Most Dangerous Game”, Hansen liked the hunt that most serial killers seek, although he took it to a whole new level. From 1971 to 1983, Hansen killed what some claim is up to thirty women, with seventeen deaths confirmed. After days of sexual abuse at his home, he would take his victims to a remote part of Anchorage, Alaska in his bush plane, let them loose, and hunt them in the woods with a Ruger Mini-14. He died in 2014 in prison.
Leonarda Cianciulli – Known as the “Soap-Maker of Correggio”, Cianciulli was an Italian serial killer who turned her victims into soap. She was a very superstitious woman and was very protective of her surviving children, losing most of them to death when they were young. When her son was drafted into the Italian army in WWII, she thought a human sacrifice was the only way to save him. She killed three of her neighbors, luring them into the house under the assumption she would read their fortunes. She rendered the bodies down and turned the fat into soap and teacakes which she gave out to her other neighbors.
Carl Panzram – Labeled by some as the most sadistic serial killer in modern times, Panzram claimed twenty-two murders and over 1000 rapes of young men. He is most famous for robbing the house of President William Howard Taft, stealing jewelry and bonds and a Colt M1911 .45 caliber pistol. He bought a yacht with theft at Taft’s home and would lure drunken sailors from New York City bars there, where he would sexual assault and kill them. He committed crimes all over the United States and was finally executed in Leavenworth in 1930.
Dagmar Overbye – Between 1913 – 1920, Overbye murder between 9 – 25 children, one of which was her own. She worked as a child caretaker in Denmark and would strangle, drown or burn children alive. She was confessed to 20 murders and was convicted of 9.
Tommy Lynn Sells – Sells murdered a confirmed twenty-two people across the United States over the course of twenty years. Not much is known about Sells, only that he was abused as a child and was a train hopper from a young age. He was sixteen when he killed his first victim and thirty-five when he killed his last. He was executed by lethal injection on April 3, 2014.
Serhiy Tkach – Former police investigator Serhiy Tkach knew how to cover up his tracks . . . or so he thought. The Russian-born Ukrainian police investigator supposedly claimed the lives of one hundred females between the ages of eight and eighteen, strangling them and then performing sex acts on their bodies. In his trial he demanded the death penalty, however, the court thought he should have to sit with his guilt, convicting him of 36 of the murders and sentencing him to life behind bars.
Authur Shawcross – Know as the “Genesee River Killer”, Shawcross murdered and an eight-year-old girl after sexually assaulting her. He was convicted of manslaughter and after a twelve-year term in prison was released on parole. After relocating to several towns in New York with his girlfriend, Shawcross began killing again, this time, he murder twelve prostitutes over a two-year span. He died in prison in 2008.
