What makes the fact that there are so few pirate films even more astounding is that there is such an astounding wealth of material that writers could draw inspiration from. Some of the most famous pirates in history, such as Charles Vane and John “Calico Jack” Rackham, have barely been touched on in popular culture. Edward Teach, otherwise known as Blackbeard, has been seen slightly more often in film and television, but there is endless potential for further stories based on him as well.
Hollywood executives should look towards the iGaming industry and see just how popular pirates are. This, coupled with the success of Pirates of the Caribbean, may persuade someone to bring out another pirate franchise. There would surely be a market out there for a fresh adventure out on the high seas.
