Pray, let me get my petticoat and bonnet, lest I flash some ear lobe.
It’s 2020. A year that for many ’80s babies meant flying cars, real hoverboards, and futuristic clothing that could only be described as, well… horrible. In 1989, The Back to the Future franchise took a futuristic trip to 2015 and revealed what we had in store for the coming years. I, for one, am still lamenting the fact we haven’t quite figured out flying cars. In fact, we’ve barely figured out what kind of porn women like to watch.
If this year has taught us anything, it’s that the world is not yet capable of agreeing on the slightest of topics. From global health crises to racial disparities laid bare, and an economy that just not really sure what it’s doing, 2020 seems confused at best. However, thanks to some recent data collection, there’s one thing we can agree on: Women watch porn, and gall darn it, we like it.
Porndoe, a site aimed at providing people persuasive pornography, is not so quietly collating one of the biggest collections of go-to lady porn. And it’s definitely not what you’d expect. But, as it turns out, neither are women.
M’Byeee
Long gone are the days where “porn for women” is some weirdly misguided code word for long stolen kisses and the irregular flash of steamy ankle. Women have spoken, what they want is quality porn, and what it looks like isn’t all that different from the mainstream. Genres like “Lesbian strap on”, “gangbang”, and “double penetration” have been firmly added to our erotic vocabulary, and that’s awesome.
In fact, recent data collection has come back with some pretty intense conviction, and that’s that women seem to really like porn with women. No apologies made. There are also some other trends that may come as a surprise to the casual observer, like the fact that women are also happily searching fetish specific genres, like BDSM and Asian. Not only are women happily whiling away their personal time with porn in hand- but they’re also, chronologically speaking, watching more porn than men. Women spend on average a minute more with each video than their male counterparts.
These findings alone seem radically different to what most people seem to think of when they are asked to consider “porn for women”. Which is just as okay as it is excellent. A 2018 study suggested that one of the biggest barriers to females watching erotic films and clips was the cognitive dissonance they experienced while watching it. Researchers discovered that many of the women in the study had problems balancing their arousal with the social appropriateness of the consumption itself. Which is more than problematic.
What a Girl Wants
“Perhaps the biggest problem [when looking to supply female-centric porn] is that most people are loath to discuss it.” Says PornDoe, referencing the somewhat obvious discomfort society has at discussing porn and women. “It’s not that women aren’t watching porn, because they absolutely are. But instead, that no one is really comfortable hearing about it.” The site mentions frustrations about the dichotomies of erotic discussion. Possibly suggesting that it’s perceived as perfectly normal for a male to reference pornography, but we tend to get a bit squirmy when it comes to a female-lead conversation of the same.
Particularly when it comes to the discussions of the genre. While it seems common to assume that ladies want the slow and sensual build up a la 1998’s iconic Meet Joe Black sex scene, it’s actually way more like 50 Shades of Kinky that they’re into. With Lesbian and gay porn being the top searches for even cis females. And cunnilingus, rough sex, and pregnancy porn hot on their heels.
Some wonder whether or not this new porn for women “revolution” should even be rightly considered as such. As many experts are beginning to believe that it may not really be a new occurrence, but instead a total lack of historical data. Possibly because they never really thought to look, or more probably because women didn’t feel comfortable being honest about their erotic tendencies. Drawing conclusions to historically female-focused social problems, like body dysmorphia and inbred insecurities.
Instead of focusing on what led the populous at large to believe that ladies weren’t all that into the same weird stuff that men are, it’s probably best to just start getting comfortable with what is. And what is, is that women like porn. All different types. And there’s nothing shameful about it.
