Looking Back At OCEAN’S ELEVEN
In 2001 Warner Brothers released the first of the legendary franchise Ocean’s Eleven. At first glance, there was nothing special about the movie’s plot. Despite the grandness of the heist, involving three casinos, it was still the story we have seen many times. But the cast of the true stars such as Georg Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, and others turned the movie into a classic.
Steven Soderbergh released the film during the holiday season, and when the children were watching the first Harry Potter movie, the parents were enjoying Ocean’s Eleven. Ted Griffin, the author of the screenplay did an exceptional job of giving the characters their unique voices and bringing them to life.
Ocean’s Eleven is a remake of the 1960 movie with the same title. Danny Ocean was performed by Frank Sinatra in the original version and by George Clooney in the modern version. Danny is released from the prison and right away travels to California, the only place he should not travel to, to meet his partner-in-crime Rusty Ryan, performed by Brad Pitt. They plan to rob the famous Bellagio, The Mirage, and the MGM Grand casinos in Las Vegas, simultaneously. From this point on, the movie mostly takes place in the buildings of the casinos, showing the life of a gambler and plot twists. The fashionable and lively casinos make every scene seem so real. The sparkling atmosphere of the glamorous casinos, the front, and the back of the house, the traditional games, poker tables, roulettes are unforgettable in this movie. The movie’s director perfectly grasped the atmosphere of inside-casino building, for instance the moment where gamers in the background play the best casino slot games is worth watching.
In this rich setting, every member of the Ocean’s gang has his own special skill and behaves like a real gentleman. The group wants to pull off the heist for money, but it is not just the material wealth Danny is after, it is also a personal matter. The owner of the casinos Terry Benedict is a new boyfriend of his ex-wife.
Some criticize Ocean’s Eleven as a fantasy and highly unrealistic because of how the things work out for Ocean and his eleven friends. However, it is not an art-house movie or a drama that aims at realism, but rather an entertainment with a Hollywood happy ending. The audience can simply enjoy just how well the film is done, the shooting scenes in the casino settings, exciting editing, plot twists, and of course an amazing ensemble of the actors delivering wonderful performances. Ocean’s Eleven is definitely not a piece of cinematic art, however, it shows so well the glamorous life, has that Hollywood quality that made Hollywood so popular in the entire world in the first place and has interesting characters that are alive and are there for a reason. There is barely any violence in the movie, especially in comparison to other crime films, it has an interesting plot about a daring group of people and if viewed without the expectations of a masterpiece, it will be a great, enjoyable experience. Maybe you might even want to check out the original with Frank Sinatra.
