Power Couples On The Pitch And Beyond Love And Sports

Being in a relationship does not always have to revolve around romantic gestures and the cliché of love at first sight. It might start with shared interests, hobbies, or employment.

As the season of love is consistent throughout life, let’s take a look at sports power couples who initially were strangers but later connected via their shared similar careers, professional sports, or love for health and fitness.

Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf

The tennis court is a place where many tales of love unfold, as seen in accounts from both novices and experienced players.

1992 Grand Slam champions Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf exemplify this scenario. Traditionally, the male and female champions are expected to dance together at the Wimbledon Ball as the event is conducted as part of the closing ceremonies for this esteemed tennis tournament.

At that time, Agassi had a significant infatuation with Graf; going to the ball was an excellent opportunity to get to know her personally. They began dating formally after the 1999 French Open.

Subsequently, they were married nine years after their first magical meeting, and the rest is history. They are still thriving more than two decades later… aww!

Shortly after being married, they had their first child who later discovered his love for playing baseball and later, a daughter who was born in 2003.

Jrue Holiday and Lauren Cheney

Cheney was a professional midfielder for the US women’s national soccer team for eight years before marrying Holiday. She won an Olympic gold medal in the FIFA World Cup championship throughout her athletic career. She was a prominent forward during that period and concluded her career streak in 2015.

When Holiday joined the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team and first encountered Cheney, they quickly became friends and then started dating soon thereafter, and it didn’t take long before the athletic pair wed on July 7, 2013.

In 2015, one year after they decided to build a family, she tragically began experiencing severe headaches. She was found to have a benign brain tumor when pregnant with their daughter. Holiday opted to skip the NBA regular season – what a man! – in order to attend to his wife. Fortunately, the couple declared Cheney’s recovery from the tragedy in 2017, and they’ve continued a flourishing marriage ever since.

In the 2020-21 season, Holiday played a pivotal role in leading the Bucks to an NBA championship, marking a standout performance with a near triple-double (12 points, 9 rebounds, and 11 assists) and earning his first NBA ring. Beyond being an ideal teammate on the court, Holiday has also been a key figure for Milwaukee’s betting enthusiasts. They count on his ability to rack up points and enhance their wagers by utilizing the latest ESPN bet promo codes, thereby increasing their potential winnings.

Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe

Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird have each achieved success in their own sports. Rapinoe has won the FIFA Women’s World Cup twice and an Olympic gold medal, while Bird has been a part of the Seattle Storm in the WNBA since 2002 and has achieved three WNBA titles and four Olympic gold medals.

They have been in a relationship since 2016 and were the first same-sex pair to appear on the cover of ESPN’s “The Body Issue.”

Being a sports power couple, it was incredibly fitting that they met during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and began dating soon after. In October 2020, they were engaged and are already organizing their wedding. However, Bird said in December 2020 that they are not in a hurry to be married.

Alex Morgan and Servando Carrasco

Alex Morgan and Servando Carrasco, both soccer players, met at the University of California, Berkeley.

Both of them pursued professional careers in the sport, as Carrasco formerly played as a midfielder for the LA Galaxy in the MLS, while Morgan was a forward for the Orlando Pride and the United States Women’s National Team and currently competes for San Diego Wave FC – Morgan has notably won the FIFA Women’s World Cup twice and achieved the Olympic gold medal in 2012.

They wed in 2014. Despite the hardships of long-distance and living on separate sides of the nation, they have managed to sustain their relationship and are still going strong to this day.
