Using crochet, Liisa Hietanen, a Finnish artist, meticulously crafts one-to-one replicas of her friends and neighbors. The accuracy of her work extends from capturing their favorite outfits to including details like their pets. Through her series “Villagers,” Hietanen finds a meaningful way to connect with individuals she frequently encounters in her hometown but may not necessarily interact with.
“I meet my models in natural everyday situations,” she explains in an artist statement on her website. “The process of choosing a model is intuitive. The person depicted might be someone I meet in the library, in the locker room of the gym, or walking their dog on the way home. I don’t know most of my models beforehand but as the process goes on I get to know them.”
Her deliberate and unhurried approach to her yarn-based craft serves as a deliberate counterbalance to the fast pace of life. Simultaneously, it mirrors the patience required to truly know and comprehend another person. The emphasis in her creations is not on achieving exact accuracy to the original subject but, instead, on the process of acquainting herself with the individual. She invests time in meticulously constructing a perfect double, embodying the deep understanding she gains during the creative journey.
Following the completion of each new piece, it is showcased in a public space to facilitate a more profound conversation with the town’s residents. Previous sculptures have graced venues such as the local library, a flower shop, and a restaurant. Moreover, these artworks often embark on journeys to participate in contemporary art exhibitions.
Crocheting appears to be undergoing a worldwide resurgence, with an increasing number of imaginative projects gaining widespread popularity. Liisa Hietanen is not the only one embracing this trend. While we’ve showcased unique creations like Crocheted Cat Butt Coasters and Crocheted Tank Slippers before, Lissa’s project stands out as the most intricate and complex among them.
